Chapter 11

Coming across the water is this strange, dead-eyed, fish-eyed stranger.

In this chapter Beowulf is portrayed as a dark, cruel warrior from across the sea. He's not so heroic or the type of person to do services for the good of other people. John Gardner was able to change my view of Beowulf and take Grendel's side of their conflict. Grendel is so much smarter and philosophical than I first read and I don't think he should die because he is deserves better than a cruel death even if he was a monster.

In this chapter Grendel describes Beowulf when he first saw him. No longer is Beowulf an amazing “godlike” specimen of mankind, now he is a dark, unreadable person. Its interesting to hear both stories description of Beowulf and how they differ depending on the point of view. Even thought you know that Grendel’s life is coming to an end you start to pull for him in hopes that he can miraculously turn his outcome around.

I liked how Gardener made the last chapter seem very mechanic, in contrast to this chapter, which is all about change. He still kept that feeling of anticipation in it, they're still waiting, but you can feel more intensity this time... I loved this chapter, and I really want to finish this post, because I'm really intrigued to see what happens in the last chapter! He also left the ended this chapter amazingly: "And now silence. Darkness. It is time." On to the end YAY!!!!!!!!

The descriptions of Beowulf in this chapter are incredibly disturbing. It seems like Grendel is more human than he is. His lack of visible emotion is creepy as hell but I think, for me at least, the most unsettling part was his treatment of Unferth. The calm and malicious way in which Beowulf retaliates to Unfert's comment about he and Breca's swimming contest was pretty damn scary. It's also interesting how the roles in Grendel are almost entirely changed from the roles in Beowulf in that Grendel is the thinker, the sympathetic character, and the hero (albeit an anti hero) and Beowulf is the mindless monster whose only purpose is killing.

Beowulf is just plain creepy in this chapter. His eyes are dead, and he even creeps GRENDEL out! Well not really creeped but Beowulf made Grendel uneasy. Really. Grendel being uneasy about killing somebody means that they're fights gonna be... a little something extra. But we all know that Grendel is going to die. It's like knowing that your favorite character in a movie is going to die, and there is nothing you can do about it. It is going to happen and there is nothing you can do about it. Beowulf finally shows up!!!!!!!!! I was so excited to see what Grendel would think of him. But I don't like the fact that he is insane in this version of the story. Beowulf is just like a zombie; he has dead eyes, scares others (Grendel) and is only set on one specific task. Poor Grendel has to try to figure out how this occurrence makes him feel. He is excited and scared which is kind of a weird mix of emotions but not impossible. I don't want Grendel to be murdered by Beowulf :c. Grendel is a lot more sophisticated then we thought before we read this book.

this chapter totally changed the way i look at Beowulf. He is so mean and scary. Before i thought of him as almost a god like human with abnormal abilities. It is very clear that Grendel is going to die. i am almost wanting Grendel to win the fight just because Beowulf is so creepy. I feel that it is the "right thing" that Grendel dies because after all he is the monster and Beowulf is the hero. Over all i really enjoyed this chapter.

It's interesting to see how Grendel describes Beowulf when he first saw him. This is the side that no one has seen of Beowulf. It seems as he's cold, cruel, and a heartless warrior. In my opinion, I think Grendel's opinion on Beowulf is more reliable than "Beowulf," the story. In the epic, he seems too "perfect," and a goody too shoes to be realistic. In reality, or in human society, everybody has their mistakes. Not everybody is perfect, but has their flaws too. Moreover, from the point of view of Grendel, there seems to be sort of an attachment towards him, and it makes you sad knowing he will get killed in the end.

I cannot believe the audacity on this guy. His mind can play tricks on itself, it's quite a talent, I must say. Grendel talks about Beowulf's body like it's a chameleon, hiding in plain sight, but hard to see. His strength hidden in such crude manly muscles. Oh, Grendel will see soon. His fate is coming. I guess every poet must die. Beowulf seems real. Like a man who seduces women and kills beasts for the fun of it. He seems sly and dangerous, but somehow so...sexy? no, not the right word. Hmm. More like a vampire, in a way. Yes Beowulf is a vampire, and that is my opinion of him.

I like how in Beowulf we didn't get any of Grendel's personality and in Grendel, Beowulf is portrayed as emotionless or lacking personality. It's interesting because in most books, you kind of get to see a description of each character. In Beowulf and Grendel, however, you don't really see the personality of the opposing character, respectively.
The Beowulf we see in Beowulf is heroic and inspiring to the men he meets. The Beowulf we see in Grendel is cruel, inhumane, blank, and just a mechanical killer of "evil". The Grendel we see in Beowulf is just a terrible, scary, and mechanical monster who kills the "good".
I actually really like how Gardner relates Beowulf to a fish through the "comes from the ocean" thing and through his identity. It's funny, but at the same time it's depressing. You never know what a fish is thinking or feeling because its face, especially the eyes, show no sign of emotion. All other animals, besides bugs and some reptiles and things like that, show feeling through their faces. I think eyes are the most expressive part of the face. It's just really intriguing how much information can be learned just from looking at someone's eyes... well that was slightly off topic...

In this chapter the month is February which is Aquarius and the symbol for Aquarius is the water bearer. It is kind of funny and interesting how Grendel is feeling joy because he knows something is going to happen. It is also funny how Grendel mistakes his heartbeat for muffled footsteps. Grendel must either have really really good hearing or a really really loud heart beat. it is also interesting to think that the leader of the strangers was described as being as big as a mountain. That would defiantly be one big leader.

Well, the waiting is done, well, almost done, but the waiting for Beowulf to finally show is done. And man, did he make an appearance. He didn't even do much! Bit if he scares/excites Grendel then he already did a lot. In Grendel's point of view, you see Beowulf as kind of a jerk in the way he acts and also very terrifying. Someone with fish eyes and a soulless face? That's pretty terrifying to me. And pretty mean to Unferth as well. not saying Unferth didn't deserve it, but Beowulf sounds way crueler than in the story 'Beowulf'. The thing with the tress and the roots also is kind of creepy. Just this whole new thing is creepy, Beowulf.

Beowulf is rather scary, the way Grendel portrays him. He lacks any sign of emotion. I would be rather alarmed if I was talking to a massive man displaying no sign of emotion. Seeing Beowulf has a strange effect on Grendel. Although he is scared of the mountain of a man at first, his reaction quickly changes. He feels excited. Alive. His tedium is over. The thing the land seemed to have been holding it's breath over has come... In the form of an extremely muscular man, described to resemble a fish. Beowulf seems be a crueler person here than he was in the original. His comments to Unferth about the murder of his brothers didn't happen in the original novel.

In this chapter, something that interested me was how Grendel described Beowulf. It interested me because Beowulf was described as a monster in a way by Grendel. Grendel said he had a dead-like voice that was also powerful and how Beowulf also had huge muscles. When Grendel saw Beowulf for the first time, Grendel knew that Beowulf seemed dangerous. In Grendel’s eyes, Beowulf is like the monster to him. I just think that when Grendel saw how Beowulf was so threatening looking, it was like Grendel was sort of in the spot of a human seeing a monster, like Grendel. In my mind, Grendel got put in the shoes of a human seeing a monster. I also think that the way Beowulf is described by Grendel in the book, really makes the reader picture Beowulf as this cold, powerful, huge muscular monster human.

The contrast in the descriptions of Beowulf in Grendel (the book) and Beowulf (the book) is somewhat extreme. The characteristics of Beowulf are very frightening to Grendel, but it was interesting to me that he would still be excited to go forward. Beowulf's creepiness was unnerving to Grendel, but he is still either undecided or scared of the new arrival. One wonder is what was going through Hrothgar's mind during this sequence. He is excited about the Geat coming, but discouraged that his men could not finish the task themselves. Beowulf would put Hrothgar to the top and the bottom at the same time.

In this chapter Grendel finally see's the thing he's waited for so long. Beowulf. IN this book he is shown to us as a scary, creepy, heartless, soulless person whose only job is to kill opponents. He is the waterberer in this chapter and also is seen as a fish for the next. Grendel also shows that he is looking out for the Danes by telling us that he cant have Hrothgar be shamed by Beowulf. He says that he will kill Beowulf for Hrothgar's honor. I feel bad for Grendel. He doesnt know that he will die in later in the knight because he is so excited and scared of the battle to come. I think he would take a different form of approuch to the situation if he was like the dragon and knew that he would die against Beowulf.

What a stark contrast in between the Beowulf of lore and John Gardner's interpretation. Seeing Grendel's point of view is so much darker. He's looking into the face of his own killer. The descriptions of Beowulf are so much more different in this book. Yet, this seems so much more realistic. A mad man who raves about how he made the seas safe for travelers is humorous for a moment, but also, a bit frightening. This is the hero Beowulf? And the way he deals with Unferth is so much more cruel. He is an emotionless, unreadable monster here.

Anthony said...

This chapter describes the big, bad, emotionless, fearless, and conceited Beowulf. Beowulf is not so heroic, he is more of an unreadable dark warrior. This chapter completely reverses the reader's thoughts on who is the real monster. I feel sorry for Grendel, because you know he's going to die a bad death. Grendel is curious about Beowulf about this "other monster" and wants to meet him.

I have produced my mailing list of addresses for Christmas similar to the video reveals making use of MS word 2010 without issues.
I can easily print one label per web page or I can
publish the very same tag on the web page 30 times.
I wish to print my list of different address on the page so
I have 30 various labels to mail. I could not receive that done
in the tag area. If I publish with the regular visiting submit, then print, I receive the file to print out
however not formatted for the type of labels I am using.
I simply do not see how I can do the various address labels to print in the label tab.

Thank you,.

We certainly have recently discovered the Crayola line of Colorwonder products and they are generally definitely Mommy
approved. There's no doubt that toddlers especially get more satisfaction away from using markers for coloring as they do not must charge as challenging achievement, and I love them given that they only color within the paper that include them. Definitely worth the more expensive to help keep my furniture, carpets, and walls who is fit.

I'm enjoying all the tips and am still learning when i optimize this art. My concern is the soldering tips........they keep disintegrate on me... I've been through 3 models, 25w and 40w, and about 6 tips.
I get a selection of lead free solder that each melt fine and continually clean and use sal ammoniac to tin the end.
Is it the flux? My fluxes don't specify, although the Weller manual says not use acid fluxes, but use rosin flux (?) HELP!

With havin so much content and articles do you ever

My blog has a lot of unique content I've either written myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any solutions to help prevent content from being stolen? I'd certainly appreciate it.
