As obvious as it is I still feel the need to say it: This chapter was so sad! For Grendel to say someone is "Fucking insane" seems like it would really take a lot but Beowulf seems as worthy of it as anyone and then some. The way he whispers to Grendel really shows just how crazy he is. The fact that it seems he won the fight only by coincidence is incredibly frustrating. It seems as though if Grendel hadn't slipped and fell in the puddle of blood he could easily have won. The one time things operate by chance instead of the mechanism he so hates it ends up killing him. -Charlie
My favorite chapter, it's like the climax of the entire story. The great beauty that rushes at the end, and i hear sweet singing in the background as he dies, with sweet peace on his face. It is a gift and a curse to live and to die. Beowulf seems cruel, but i regard Grendel's death like those of the Spartans at Thermopylae. But much slower much more peaceful, more more meaningful, like death brings a prize that you recieve as a man alive in the last moments of life. It's a beautiful tragedy, and i want to bury my nose in it's beauty and inhale deeply. He's never had children. Yet he's had lust, somehow, love, somehow? It was his destiny to die, as is all people's and that's what it really comes too, but was your life meaningful? What does meaning even mean anymore. I don't even know, but i sleep softly and soundly in my blanket of velvet lies and undulating peace. It feels safe, I feel safe in uncertainty.
GRENDEL!! :C R.I.P. Beowulf is scarier than Grendel is. Not only does Grendel slip on a puddle of blood which made it sooooo much easier for Beowulf but he also whispers in Grendel's ear before he rips his arm off. This chapter refers a lot to the beginning of the book. I hadn't originally thought of Beowulf as being one of those mechanical things that only has its mind set on one thing. I really wish Grendel would have ripped Beowulf apart..... Stupid puddle :C
This chapter was a beautiful way to end an exceptional book!!!! I love how Grendel is crazed, wild (hallucinating?) towards the end, till the last bit, were he seems almost, calm... It was a bit creepy I thought when he described how he thought if he took another breath, all life would leave with the air... This book was soooooo good!!!!
This chapter was so sad. In my opinion, I think that Beowulf is cruel and just hates the world if he makes Grendel sing about walls. It seems as Beowulf has something messing in his head. I also found it interesting how Grendel starts to get crazier and crazier the more he fights with Beowulf. Moreover, it frustrates me how Beowulf got the upper hand on Grendel because he slipped on a puddle of blood, and that was meant to be an accident. Grendel claims that it's unfair, but in reality, you don't get second chances because of what the world has become to day, and it all started with a simple song or saying from the Shaper.
This last chapter was rather depressing in a scary way. Beowulf is whispering away in Grendel's ear. He acts kinda like that really creepy guy from Saw...Jigsaw. Jigsaw says that he'll let the kidnapped people go if they solve his puzzle. Beowulf didn't exactly say that he would let him go if he sang, but Beowulf is still sort of forcing Grendel to do something he doesn't want to do. In the end it's all pointless because Grendel dies. His most hated version of the universe, the Mechanical Universe, would have saved him. Too bad the world is like that (for Grendel I mean).
In this chapter the month is March which is Pisces and the symbol is a fish. My favorite line in this chapter was "I snatch a cloth from the nearest table and tie it around my neck to make a napkin. I delay no longer." I thought that this sentence was pretty funny and really got you to wonder what was going to happen next. It was also a good trick that Beowulf played on Grendel by looking like he was asleep and then grabbing him while he tried to kill him and eat him. I think that Grendel should have known better though. It is also interesting that Grendel feels that he is next to a cliff by an oak tree when he is being killed by Beowulf.
This chapter was incredibly sad :/ Not only because it was lithe last chapter, but because Grendel, the monster we have all come to love, has died:( Beowulf was also very creepy, we saw a whole new side of Beowulf. Like, whispering in Grenel's ear and stuff, creepy O.O He also makes Grendel sing about walls and stuff, also very creepy. The thing I only really liked about this chapter is how the end of the book ties in with the beginning. With all Gremdel's poem and metaphors. I found it to be very beautiful, besides when his arm gets torn off >:(
I thought that the obviousness of the "the villain you though was the villain is actually the good guy" story of this book was a little overwhelming to me. In this chapter I really felt like John Gardner directly contrasted the story of Beowulf (the original tale). This was obviously the point of the book in which we were supposed to be one hundred percent Grendel and zero percent Beowulf, i'll give him that. To me a truly good story with a truly good story teller is one that tells both sides of the story at the same time at least a bit. This chapter was a little too heavily weighted on Beowulf being a creepy monster than i found likable. I did, however, think that the chapter was incredibly effective in displaying this point.
This chapter was sad, annoying, and really creepy. Grendel just flips his shit and becomes really crazy. The fact that Beowulf is "whispering" makes it really creepy. Telling him to sing was just weird, but it was funny when he sang of the hardness of walls. I really felt bad for Grendel because everything he hate and has learned all comes together here.
I really liked his journey to becoming a true poet and he is MASTER in this chapter.
But in the end, Grendel dies and I feel sad for him. He was so scared, and when he called for help, there was no one. Only him to lay on the ground bleeding to death with towms people around to watch.
He blessed and curses the animals. He goes back to the chasm and he finally falls.
It seems the novel has drawn to a close, and so has the life of our beloved Grendel. Retracing your steps, and rereading the epic from Grendel's pont of view makes you forget where you're going. I was hoping that he would somehow manage to win the fight, but I had to accept his death. The moments before his demise are especially saddening. The feeling is familiar with me, as I am sure it is familiar with all of my fellows. That instinct of a child to call out for their mother when in pain or sensing danger. It makes Grendel seem more human and relatable.
Poor Grendel! For some reason, Gardner made me see Grendel as a child on christmas morning. He was excited. He'd been waiting for what seemed like ever for something to happen. But then when it does happen, oh it's bad. The Beowulf in this book is very mean. Even harsher than the original. When Grendel has his arm twisted up behind his back, I saw the real lunatic come out in Beowulf. He wanted a dying monster to sing about walls. If Grendel hadn't slipped in that puddle of blood, he would've stood a chance against Beowulf. Like he said, he lost due to an accident. The slip in the blood was an accident.
In this chapter, I was interested by how Grendel kept saying there was no meaning to Beowulf attacking him and it was all just chance, basically. I think Grendel is pretty much correct about his point about how it was all just chance. I think Grendel is correct because in the first place, Beowulf tricked him. So when Beowulf tricked him, it gave an advantage to Beowulf over Grendel, and also Grendel couldn’t have fought back fairly. The second thing was that Grendel also slipped which was a total accident. So Beowulf can’t really try and find meaning in the fight because some things happened to Grendel that were just things that gave Beowulf a better shot at winning the battle. I also just feel bad for Grendel because this big and strong human just came along and just killed Grendel through a fight, that in my opinion, wasn’t really fair. I also think that Beowulf was pretty unnecessarily cruel to Grendel during the fight, too.
Beowulf was just insane in this chapter, John Gardner had made him the fiery angel of death instead of the strong hero he first seemed to be. Grendel had been so exited for the arrival of fun new strangers but all he gets is a confusing violent death. Poor Grendel was also forced to listen to Beowulf's crazy theories, leaving him confused about what's real and what was a hallucination.
This chapter was so sad. I wanted Grendel to win so bad. Beowulf is so horrible crazy. Beowulf really seems like killing monsters is what he loves to do. He does not just kill them he has to whispers into their ear and freak them out. Grendel could have so easily won if he had not slipped that that blood. Poor Grendel.
This chapter releases all hell on Grendel. First, he enters the Mead Hall and destroys and swallows every last Geat. Then he comes upon Beowulf, who surprises him with his strength, and they begin to fight. I think it is interesting how Gardner narrates this fight as being between Angel and Devil. After twisting Grendel's arm behind his back, Beowulf whispers to him that he is "the Lord's shepherd". After Beowulf takes Grendel's arm off, Grendel sees this as an accident. At the end of this chapter, Grendel is going to jump down a dark chasm to his death.
This is chapter is really just the end of Grendel. Beowolf and Grendel begin to fight and the author relates it to the angel and the devil battling it out. Beowolf then takes grendels arm off but grendel sees this as chance. At the end Grendel is falling to jump into the endless chasm of death
I understand that this chapter is heart-wrenching and really, I cried at how Grendel dies, it's sad how he goes through life feeling as though it's meaningless and ugly. Life is truly beautiful and I think that although the Danes have made many mistakes and have done some extremely cruel things, they still have hope, they still have a reason for living and for improving themselves. Let's also not forget all the cruel, disgusting things Grendel did throughout the book. And seriously, it was disgusting when he intruded into Hrothgar's room and grabbed open the beautiful queen's legs. So, Grendel thinks Hrothgar is "crazy" for throwing an axe at him, he thinks humans are "crazy" for defending themselves, a little too early, but you have to admit they did not know what Grendel was, so they were scared. And now Beowulf is "crazy/insane" for making him "sing of walls". See, Beowulf was emphasizing the wall to Grendel to show him that his existentialist beliefs are wrong. I'm pretty sure Grendel didn't put a wall there so that Beowulf could break his forehead on it. Beowulf was emphasizing the fact that Grendel does not make his own meaning, and that obviously going through life without hope is terrible. Just because Beowulf ended up killing Grendel so cruely does not mean we can go all out defending Grendel, who although we may have sympathy for him, he did MANY MANY cruel things as well. If Grendel had won or gotten the upper hand against Beowulf, he would have continued killing humans! We can't just disregard all the killing Grendel has done! I don't understand how people act like Beowulf is the super bad guy here, he was defending all the Danes that were being killed by Grendel! And if the beautiful seasons on this quite beautiful Earth were not "mechanical" we would not know what to wear each season! D': stop seeing things so negatively!
