Chapter 2

Aw, he's just a little monster and he's stuck in a tree and he's scared. Poor little Grendel!

This chapter was a little depressing in a few ways. The first one, I would like to point out, is that Grendal had a crappy childhood. Though I guess it was an "okay" one considering the fact he was a monster... But the ways I think it was depressing is that, one, he never would play out in the daylight, he never once saw the sun until he finally got caught in the tree and was forced to be in it. Another is that he had no one to play with, he could only play with his shadow. The people, or monsters that were around didn't play with him because they were too lazy and fat, including his mother. Another depressing thing is that, he thinks and sees that everything around him is nothing, that he is the only thing that is real thing. That everything around him is mechanical. Honestly, I think that is depressing because whether your a child, or a monster child, I don't think it's really good for you to be thinking those kinds of things... It'll end up just making him crazy thinking he's the only non-mechanical thing in the universe.

It must have been really weird as a young monster to have been exploring those caves. Dark lumps in the corner just staring at you... creepy. And then when he got stuck in the tree, mauled by a bull, attacked by humans and THEN crushed by his mother? WOW. How that must reflect on the REST of his childhood. I also feel like he turned into his teens after his attack session. He feels alone in the world, hates others and doesn't really do what his mother says. Also I think he thinks patterns are stupid because of the incident where he was looking for his mom. He probably thinks that patterns are deceptive things to make you keep up false hopes.

In this chapter we see Grendel emerge from his happy childhood through an incident inn the woods. He comes out as a thinking, solipsistic individual who understands the concept of pattern making. A stark contrast to the original character. I find myself again empathetic for him in this chapter. I was worried for his sake when he was trapped between the boles and confronted by the bull, and proud of his developemnt when he understood the bull as being a mechanism.

In Beowulf I pictured Grendel being whiny and annoying his entire life. I thought it was cool that we were introduced to Grendel in this book as an adult and then brought back to see how he was as a child and I could tell how much he had changed going from childhood to adulthood. I felt bad for him when he was stuck in the tree and being attacked by the bull. If those same events had happened to the Grendel that we knew in Beowulf I wouldn’t have been as sympathetic towards him.

His childhood seemed so happy, his future tortures me so.
Like a child in an orphanage, Grendel is lost. This memory is not like a reverie, more like a replaying nightmare, reminding him of what bliss he once had. That’s all I can think about. Even though in this chapter, there were so many events that affected the outcome of who Grendel became, the thought that once, Grendel was happy, haunts me. No bull attack, parental hugs, or raging screams surpasses the pain that is endured being forced to live when once, all was right.
Is it right for any creature, man or beast, to be tortured every day, in his own memories, becoming someone that creates his own suffering. The desire for happiness creates the presence of pain, I’m afraid. He is suffering. Suffering because he cannot forget what he once had. This endearing ignorance that brought on so much troubling bliss. Knowing so much and understanding after knowing the happiness that came with ignorance. Being Grendel, I would live a thousand times over to forget what I understand. Die a thousand times over to live once again.

Even though Grendel's early life obviously seems depressing and terrible, it still intrigues me very much so. I think I would want to be him for a day. To see what he feels like and to experience his thought process. I feel like he is smarter than most humans but at the same time his range of emotions and certain actions are similar to ours. Like when he cries to his mother when he's hurt, it shows his natural young child instinct. The whole mechanic world thought is simply brilliant. I liked when he said that humans are dangerous. Because we are. We really are. Our minds are dangerous. We have these patterns that we form and these regularities that we live by. It's so very very true.

This chapter was a depressing :[. Grendel didn't have the best childhood but he has a loving mom. I found it very interesting that such a little "monster boy thingy" would think about being the only creature that actually exists. Grendel definitely is more intelligent than any of the characters especially when it comes to something that is unknown to them. When Grendel is trapped in the tree and he first sees humans he is able to process that they might be like him in other ways besides looking relatively like him. It was kinda barbaric that they just started attacking Grendel. I was confused by how his mother could hear him scream when he is being attacked but couldn't hear him when he was caught in the tree.

I think this chapter's main idea was even though Grendel is a monster, he still has the same feelings humans do. As soon as he gets hurt, his first reaction is to yell for his mom. Although his mom is distant and doesn't really talk, Grendel knows he is loved. On the other hand, his childhood seems to be filled with a yearning for his mother to engage with him and interact with him more. He tries to tell his discoveries and ideas with her and she just sits there.
It's also quite depressing that he has no one to talk to. He tries to communicate with different things, yet nothing responds or understands. I feel bad for Grendel because he really is alone in the world.
I think Grendel develops his sarcasm overtime as a coping mechanism to all this loneliness he feels everyday... The character in chapter one is so cynical compared to his life as a young monster (roaming, exploring, open to learning).

I think that chapter two showed Grendel's innocent side. Afraid and alone, you can feel in the writing Grendel's fear when he's stuck in the tree.
His first encounter with the humans (Hrothgar) is when Grendel begins to realize that these odd rat like things are more intelligent than other things he's delt with before, and more dangerous. I really like his first exposure to the humans, because it shows how quickly we can change reality/ make up things, to suit our actions or justify them.
I think maybe Grendel doesn't like that because it doesn't follow the slow everyday life that Grendel's figured out for most things on the earth.

Grendel's childhood is very interesting, especially meeting the bull while being stuck in a tree. His philosophical thoughts of the world is somewhat true, yet it can be too complicated for the humans in his time. The first encounter with men must have been strange. I predict that he must have been really confused because he can understand their language and it kinds of forces him to feel connected to them. Not being able to communicate with his mother or the monsters in her cave must have been awful. From my perspective, without being able to communicate with others in some way seem difficult and annoying because some things, you just want to get off your chess, but you can't. The only way for Grendel to communicate to others is by the humans, but obviously, that's not going to work out because the humans have categorize him as an evil being.

This chapter showed us all about Grendel’s childhood which might not have been the best that one could ask for, but at least he had his loving mother with him along the way. Even though they might not have interacted with one another that much.We also saw that Grendel is even more intelligent when it comes to things what he has never seen before. Like his first encounter with the men when he got stuck in the tree. Grendel’s first reaction was that he must be related to these creatures in someway. I feel bad for Grendel because he has know one to communicate with and must feel very alone.

I don't see Grendel as the horrifying monster in Beowulf now, but as a vulnerable, young monster who still doesn't understand how to help himself in bad situations. He was so dependent on his mother for help and wasn't able to escape the bull or the men until she came and rescued him. I am surprised at how much knowledge he gained about the animals, the humans, and the world around him. He seems more innocent and small in the world compared to the older Grendel that Beowulf had slayed.

I really enjoyed this chapter. I liked how it showed the innocent, bewildered part of him. It shows that he is just like any other child... except for the fact that he's a monster, lives in the woods, and has never seen the light of day (until he got stuck, and was forced to). I felt sad and scared for his sake when he was trapped between the two boles. Then on top of that, the tree is rammed by a bull (all the while, his leg is practically SPURTING blood and he's crying for his mother to come rescue him). Then the humans came at day. This was a first for both, so you have the bewildered side, but then the humans think it's a tree spirit. Grendel starts messing with them, the mischievous side, and so they get scared and are about to shoot him. This is when he starts to figure out that the world is a cruel place and couldn't care less about him.

His mother then comes screaming down the hill, takes him back to the cave and suffocates him with her giant rolls of furry fat.

This Grendel really makes you feel for him, sort of like Wicked. Instead of seeing The Wicked Witch of the West as bad, it's really Dorothy. In this case, you think of Beowulf as an a-hole, and think of Grendel as this cute, sarcastic ridiculous monster.

Being Grendel as a youngster must have been very hard. It was interesting how he would explore out side of the cave farther and farther every day. He seems very cute since he is just trying to figure out this whole living in the real world kind of thing. But then things start to get worse and worse for Grendel that day. First he gets his foot stuck in that tree. This Did not seem to hurt him too much physically but then the bull came. Grendel is such a interesting character they way he responds and thinks about situations. I would like to see what its like to be him. Grendel's in a way does not have much of a childhood because he is forced to learn things fast and on his own with out mentoring. This builds his character a lot. Grendel is a very complex monster.

This chapter covers Grendel's childhood, which in my opinion, is sad and depressing. Grendel always seems to be unlucky; not only getting his foot stuck in a tree, but also having his mother not respond to his cries for help. Besides the fact that Grendel has no friends, he still has a mother who cares for him somewhat. I thought that it was somewhat strange how Grendal perceives that the universe is mechanical and that he was the only thing that was real.

In Chapter two Grendel was again showed a different side of himself. He was going through different places that he never knew existed and would see things that he didn't even know were possible. Also, there was a bull that attacked him while he was up in a tree. Grendel also believes that he is the only real thing and isn't sure if everyone around him is real. This must make Grendel go cray thinking about all of this and seeing all of this stuff.

In this second chapter, I really liked how you see the way Grendel first interprets the humans. Similar to the way I liked the impression of the religion, I was interested in how an outsider would interpret humans. Grendel describes humans as rat-like creatures in a way with movements that are figured with logic. I just think that is a great way that a human would be described by an outsider. I also am intrigued when Grendel realizes that the humans are not mechanical, they are “pattern makers,” like him in a way. Grendel even says that they are the most dangerous creatures he has encountered. He calls them thinking creatures which is saying that they are more like him, and not like the bull that was ramming him repeatedly. Also in this chapter, I saw that even as Grendel was a young monster, he had very complex thoughts like solipsism and such.

The more that I read this book, the more I start to like who Grendel is. We start to see elements of him that are more humanoid and that are slowing coaxing me out of the mindset of him being a monster. In chapter two, we get to take a look back in time to the days of his childhood. He is young, innocent, and playful, exploring and learning more and more about the world around him each passing day. He is also like a child in the sense that while at times he is adventurous, he still has fears, and we see that as a child, the sun was one of his biggest. But like a young child who is afraid of the dark, Grendel also ends up having to face his fear of the daytime when he finds himself stuck in the tree. He cries for his mom, something predictable and expected from any young animal, and we start to see even more how much Grendel really is like us and not just a heartless monster. When he sees the humans for the first time, he notices two very important things. First, that they are just like him in some ways and they even speak his language. Second, that they are very dangerous. He realizes that while he may be smart, these creatures may be just as smart as he is, and that he’s not dealing with some mechanical bull. I think that this may be one of the things that really causes him to grow up. When he realizes that these humans might possibly be even more dangerous than he is, he realizes that he is not invincible and that the world is actually a scary place.

So far in the book we have gotten grendals storys as a child and all the things grendal has said so far have been making him more human in the readers mind. A big moment for grendal was when he first came into contact with humans who were short, ratlike creatures with hands that click. You also begin to here about grendals views on the world. This book just keeps adding to the backstory of a character that we all considered to just be a monster

Grendel, in this chapter begins to learn more about the world. This is the begging of him turning into a philosopher. Before the begging of the first year in the twelve years Grendel thought that the world was a weird strange place since all he knew was his mum who didnt talk and his brethren monsters who just sat and stared at him. After the run in with the bull his world view changes and he becomes solipsistic starts to think about place in which he lives in. This is also his first run in with the humans, who he thinks look like rats and have shiny heads with horns. After they try to kill him his mum comes to the rescue. This contradicts the book Beowulf in which the Danes dont know about Grendels mother. In Grendel they Danes see Grendel and his mum.

Chris said...

This chapter was significant because it seemed as though this is the first time that Grendel formed opinions and understandings (even remotely) of humans. It was strange how Grendel appears to be able to speak and interact in the same language as the Danes, and yet when they come into contact with each other, neither understands the other. When Grendel is actually shown some remote kindness by the Danes, all of a sudden he doesn't actually seem able to converse with them. Grendel actually appreciated the kindness the Danes initially had toward him, but since he couldn't converse with them, he must have been immensely frustrated.

Madeleine said...

Grendel's early childhood is one of the only times in his life where he doesn't view the world as hollow and fake, it seems. he grows up in relative safety, although there's no real social interaction. He has his mother, and he explores. That seems to be enough for him. Once he experiences the cruelty of the world, his philosophy changes to something bitter and cold. He realizes that the world doesn't care about him. He displays a tendency to philosophize about things more deeply than even the humans, which he seems to be aware of.

Although Grendel starts out being relatively innocent, this is when that ends.
