Grendel watches as these humans are playing with their own minds speaking to themselves in the voice of Gods. Its so powerful, how he can just change the entire course of a religion with the few simple words of: I am the destroyer. What do you know of the king of the Gods? He holds the power of an entire race in his hands, and it's so easy to manipulate humans to believe as he wants them to believe. Grendel kind of is God. He controls the humans with his words, with his will. He practically is the God of humans.
It amazes me how Grendel just makes Ork believe him as easily as he did. I like how Grendel continues to mock the beliefs and religions of humans and just plays with their minds. He has the ability to screw with any human's mind as he pleases because he is not human and wasn't born into believing in those kind of cultural beliefs. I got so excited when i saw that one of the charcters was named Ork but then it wasn't an Orc. /-.-\
Again and again we prove to Grendel how gullible and dumb we are. All he has to say to a priest it "I am the destroyer." and he instantly starts to bow down and stuff. He has a doubt but he just quells it because religion has made him so blind! He sets the bar. All humans (back then) kinda just groveled towards the gods and did everything t he could just to avoid pissing them off. It kind of annoys me that we were such brainless twits. never thinking for ourselves and trying to have a god fix it all.
I enjoyed this chapter. Watching Grendel trick Ork is devilishly entertaining. It is also sweet to see the passion of Ork as he weeps though. His ignorance to the situation, but overall wisdom are also pleasant to see in this chapter. I liked seeing the views presented by Ork, as they are different from the previous views presented. The blind faith also annoys me as it does Grendel. The idea of not questioning god because god is irrational is irritating because of the lack of logical thinking. This was another good chapter presenting human development and the consciousness of religion.
The character of Ork really touched me in a way. At first I thought he was so dumb and gullible to believe that he was talking to the Destroyer. But then I saw how genuinely faithful and passionate about religion and what he was saying. On one hand, I thought he had been brainwashed so thoroughly and completely that he truly thought there were gods, etc. and truly thought everything about the religion was right. On the other hand, I started to see that he doubted himself AND his religion. I also saw that what he was saying had much more to do with philosophy than religion. I really like what he says. Ork realizes and says that God himself is irrational and not "actual". Although he very apparently believes in the gods, he says, "the ultimate evil is that Time is perpetual perishing, and being actual involves elimination". There Ork points out indirectly that because the gods are immortal, they can't possibly be real. Another thing he says that intrigues me probably as much as it intrigues Amy is what he says about the two propositions about the nature of evil (time). Ork says, "things fade and alternatives exclude." The first one is kind of obviously sad; the way things slowly die as they get older like a flower. The second one however, really makes me wish some magical, impossible, time-traveling, life rewinding universal remote existed. The way that every thing you do, no matter how small, makes your life different than if you hadn't done that thing... It really makes me want to do outrageous and crazy things with my life... I think Ork is my favorite character in the book, even if he is a priest.
The moments where humans are actually insightful and/or wise in this book often surprise me. I get the feeling that in the case of Ork, Grendel was a bit surprised too. Ork, while he did possess faith in the gods (as well as the "King of gods), was not blind in that faith. Until his encounter with Grendel posing as The Destroyer he had been a skeptic seeking logic. In this he displays a great deal more wisdom than other people in the book especially in juxtaposition to the fourth priest whose blind faith disgusts Grendel. It also strikes me as somewhat funny that Grendel, the supreme atheist, would accidentally serve in his actions to reinforce the religious beliefs of a skeptic. -Charlie B.

Just by speaking Grendel can make the humans interact and think the way he wants them to. Grendels words "I am the destroyer" made people instantly bow down to him. this is crazy how Grendel is in control. He can talk his way in and out of any situation. His trickery is so much fun to read. Grendel is the most complex character i have ever seen.
I love what Grendel does to show how gullible humans are in this chapter. They want to believe so badly that they will almost believe anything. Grendel, however, is above that. He sees that from the beginning all that the humans have done is make up religion and gods. Grendel was even there listening when the shaper first started to shape religion. So Grendel knows the truth, and therefore knows how to mess with the humans’ minds. Which is exactly what he does with Ork. Only a few simple words from a monster and Ork’s life was changed forever. He had encountered the Destroyer, talked with this great king of gods! And yet, he didn’t. It was actually the evil monster that they pray for the Destroyer to vanquish. I find it ironic that they pray to the Destroyer to kill Grendel and then Grendel himself is the one who impersonates the Destroyer in the end.
this chapter was kind of weird. we meet a new character named Ork, and we get to see how Grendel reacts to him. not only how he reacts to him but how he tricks him. he looks at children creating snow angels, listens to the priests listens to ork. but yet again we get to see how Grendel looks at the world and tries to figure it out. he sees how maybe the world he lives in is not meaningless. a completely different view for a nihilist.
This chapter was a little sad, the fact that Grendal, can have humans believe he is, "The Destroyer" is not very good. Haha if you told them to do certain things, they probably would. Like, "Bring me a cow as an offering". Grendal would have no work of having to go steal a cow. I think it's also very interesting that Grendal, is not necessarily having a change of heart on the though of religion, but he is starting to consider it and take in to fact that the humans really believe in the gods. And it's also kinda sad and cool that Grendal knows something is coming... Doesn't know what, but just that something is coming........ And he's waiting for it..
I like how this chapter almost makes a joke of religion! One point that I got from this chapter is how if the priest in the woods was so easily tricked, then it must be soooooo easy to trick people into believing in religion. All of the references to death are cool... The angles, the footsteps... But does this only reference to Grendel's ominous fate, or the Shaper's as well?

I also found it entertaining to read about Grendals response to humans who were trying to figure out who was speaking to them inside their heads. Ork is saying that God is not an actual being because you cant prove that he’s there but still he is the basis of everything that is real. Again we can se the development of human nature and of they way religion has evolved. Grendal most likely knows more then the humans do but he has no one to talk with so In a way its pretty depressing.

I found it ridiculous how all the priests believed in their religion so much that they weren't open at all to hearing the rational thoughts of Ork. I like how Grendel just plays with the humans and gets them to believe the strangest things. All he had to do was name himself "The Destroyer" and he was already being worshipped by some human. It makes me think how blind people can be and just rely on something told to them without questioning it.
In this chapter the month is December and it is Sagittarius. The symbol for Sagittarius is the hunter/ the archer. I liked how Grendel put his opinion on religion; its stupid and its all made-up. I also think it is interesting in this chapter how time can be both in the hunter and the hart. This means that when an archer goes to get ready to kill and animal and when he shoots it seems like everything is in slow-motion to him and the animal. Grendel is also mad about the speeches of the Fourth Priest, which were stories that were made up by the Shaper in this chapter. Grendel also meets the Ork in this chapter and Ork has a some what similar idea about there being gods and Grendel; he thinks there is a possibility but isn't completely sure if there are god and he is doubtful about there being gods that exist. I also think in this chapter it is interesting to think that according to the story in the book that the gods are the most supreme for of living things and that as hard as a person tries the god will always excel above them.
In this chapter, I was really interested by how Grendel just thinks religion is so stupid. I think that any outsider that was looking into the human race and its various types of religions, they would think it was stupid, too. When the priests ask the gods to destroy Grendel and then Grendel waits for it and nothing happens to him, I think that is pretty funny. I just like how Grendel just keeps disproving their ridiculous “theories.” I just find it odd that they believe that God is the base of everything that is real, but they even say that God himself is not fully concrete
Grendel seems to be having sun and conducting experiments at the same time. He pretends to be the destroyer god and manages to get to get the priest Ork to believe him. In doing so, he finds out just how far the humans will go to believe in something. When Grendel says "I am the Destroyer god" a look of doubt crosses Ork's face. But he quickly makes himself believe the random furry monster sitting in front of him is the destroyer. Grendel still can't help himself, and has to poke fun at Ork. In doing so, Ork gives him a long meaningful speech, and Grendel is forced by his contemplative brain to think about it.

Then time speeds up again when the arrow is launched for the kill. Later on he begins to see religion evolving in human society and culture. Grendel see's that they are making giant statues for the "gods" and decides to play a trick on them by pretending to be one of the gods when a priest comes up. the priest tells Grendel about the king of gods and how there are to "great evils" that are things fade and alternatives exclude. When more priests come Grendel hides and watches them talk to Ork (the priest)about his "vision" of god. They don't believe him at first but when a 4th priest comes he believe Orks vision even though Ork didn't have any proof about it. Grendel is shocked and disgusted by this since only he knows that "the Shaper" created this religion and that people actually believe this crud.
I liked the irony of this chapter. The impersonation of the destroyer god must have been great fun for Grendel. I was wondering, however, what the priest ork must have actually been thinking, for he could not see Grendel. I do imagine what Grendel's voice would actually be like, for he seems to be able to accurately converse with the humans. If he were able to speak like a god, then he must also be able to speak like a human. Maybe he will continue with his new found fun of impersonation in the night.
Ok..I personally believe that it is not the nicest of things to trick old, blind priests. Yes, Grendel was confronting Ork because he wanted to know about "The King of The Gods." After Ork gives detailed and well thought out descriptions of the gods, the other priests point out that he's not talking to The Great Destroyer, but a devious monster. This chapter basically shows to me how gullible humans are about anything to do with religion.
